Are the Missouri Tigers Big 12 favorites? It kind of feels weird saying that. Usually we talk about Oklahoma and Texas. But last year, Missouri was a sniff away from making a BCS game. They have Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin to thank for their success. There is no doubt in my mind that Missouri fans expect big things from their team this year.
I just read an article on ESPN.com that was touting the Tigers as BCS Bowl contenders, but it got me wondering… are they contenders, or are they favorites?
Missouri: The Tigers still are chapped about getting left out of the BCS in 2007. Quarterback Chase Daniel and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin are determined to make sure the team isn’t snubbed again in 2008.
What do you think? They have a very strong offense with two Heisman candidates and a balanced defense. If they can take a leap forward and beat Oklahoma, then I think Missouri has a very strong chance at making a BCS game.

The Missouri Tigers were just dealt some bad news. Wide receiver Danario Alexander will miss at least the nonconference part of the Tigers’ upcoming football season, having torn a graft on his anterior cruciate ligament, a repair to his left knee that he underwent after last season. It was Alexander’s injury last season that opened the door for Jeremy Maclin to be a starter. You never wish for injury on someone, but if Alexander was never hurt, Maclin may not have had the opportunities he had last season.
But Alexander and Maclin are connected in an other way too. They roomed together last season at Missouri and Maclin has been very kind and helpful with Alexanders recovery. “He’s been through this before and knows what it takes to come back quickly,” Alexander said in April. Maclin tore his ACL in the summer before his true freshman year. He sat out that season and then broke out as a redshirt freshman last year.
With Alexander down for at least the first half of the season, even more defender’s eyes will be on Jeremy Maclin.

Phil Steele, who publishes the College Football Preview magazine, posted his Big 12 All Conference Team for 2008. These are just preseason rankings, because obviously the season hasn’t started yet. Our favorite Missouri Tiger, Jeremy Maclin, was selected on the 1st Team Offense for the wide receiver position and 2nd Team Special Teams for kick returner and punt returner.
You can check out Phil Steele’s entire rankings here.
If his projection are any indication to how the season might turn out, then it will be a great year for Jeremy Maclin. With honors like this, then he will surely go pro after the 2008 football season and enter the 2009 NFL Draft. It would not be a surprise if he were a first round pick and the top WR taken.
